The Communist Manifesto is the most famous of all socialist documents. It appeared in February 1848, on the eve of the European revolution the authors had foreseen. They were still young men, not yet 30 years of age. Socialism, before Marx and Engels, flourished in many different schools and sects. Marx and Engels lifted socialism from the realm of utopia to the realm of science. Although it is more than 150 years old, The Communist Manifesto is as invigorating and topical as on the day it was written.

To understand how it came to be written, Dirk J. Struik goes back into history, describing the social and intellectual milieu in which the historical document was conceived and written. With the aid of material only recently discovered, he unravels the relations among the various sects and the history of the Communist League, for which the Manifesto was written. Included are the full text of the Manifesto, all Prefaces by Marx and Engels, two preliminary drafts by Engels, an account of the early history of the Manifesto in the United States, and other relevant material.
