Indonesia: The Second Greatest Crime of the Century

indonesia.jpg $5.00
By Deirdre Griswold

Before October 1965, Indonesia had the largest left movement outside the socialist countries, while the government of President Sukarno pursued a militantly anti-imperialist foreign policy. Today its abundant natural resources are a veritable treasure trove for U.S. corporations, while the people suffer under a fascistic and corrupt military dictatorship.

What happened to turn Indonesia around?

This pamphlet tells of the massacres following the October 1, 1965, military takeover that decimated the Indonesian left. It focuses on the role of Washington in providing essential clandestine support for the right-wing generals in that bloodbath. The crushing in blood of the left movement of Indonesia in 1965-66 not only turned around that nation of over 100 million people; it also affected the course of events in Southeast Asia, China, and other lands as well.

The story is a horrible one. But learning the political lessons of Indonesia can help all who want to fight against imperialist domination as well as repression here at home.
