Encounter by Jane Yolen

Illustrated by David Shannon

It is said that in 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered a new world, yet what he really found was a people with an established culture and civilization of their own. This is the story of that first meeting as seen through the eyes of a Taino boy—an encounter that changed the world forever.

This is a beautiful picture book that tells the story of the landing of Columbus at San Salvador, the place called Guanahani by the indigenous Taino people who lived there. Columbus carried away six to 10 young Taino men and women, carting them back to Spain as slaves. Though there were originally some 300,000 indigenous islanders, after the Spanish colonization, just 50 years later—less than 500 remained. Today, there are no full-blooded Taino.

This book tells of the loss of a culture, language, a whole civilization with a brave Taino boy's story.
